JAMIE COLLAPSED INTO the heated seat of his SUV with a drive-through coffee and his laptop. He needed alone time to think. He’d left Kendall sweeping. With everything from leaves to epically large dust bunnies indoors, she volunteered to clean the “old school way,” since vacuuming was out of the question. He could tell she still felt bad about blowing the electrical system. It wasn’t her fault—he’d said so repeatedly—but she still seemed off.

Parking in a quiet lot behind one of Dickens’ Main Street stores, he savored the warm brew he once took for granted. Sure, he was saving money by not buying overpriced coffee every day. But that was laughable, considering the outlay of cash the lodge required.

Feeling a sense of restlessness, Jamie opened his email and gasped at the veritable explosion of messages.

Guess that email query I sent out to possible investors was well received.

He’d talked up the history of the lodge and shared pics of some of its most outstanding architectural features. His email also read like the first chapter of a mystery novel. Who were Guy Chandler and Harper Henry? Readers were obviously captivated by the place steeped in a legacy of love. Even his best friend Tom wanted in on the action, saying he’d cash in stocks to own a piece of The Iron Gate Lodge.

Jamie closed his laptop and then closed his eyes.

He’d left Kendall alone with Bert Hinkle. He now employed two people, who were counting on him for paychecks.

So much for a fire sale approach to getting out of this.

Never one to ride the fence, the conflict waging inside Jamie—between his heart and his head—ultimately made him queasy. On one hand, he wanted to escape the crushing financial weight. On the other hand, he was excited.

Okay...that’s a serious understatement. I’m pumped about the idea of fixing up a historic landmark with so much charisma.

He'd woken pre-dawn, eager to tackle his to-do list. The plan felt real when the WiFi and cable guy arrived. Whether it was attainable or not, the journey had begun. Until the power went out and he was forced to course-correct. Having Kendall there made the difference between freaking out and actually seeing the lighter side of things.

That truth was difficult to grasp. She was practically a stranger. They barely knew anything about each other, and yet... He liked her. And not just because she was hot. She made him smile and even laugh at himself. To feel like they just might accomplish this monumental task.

Jamie opened his laptop again, determined to sort through all the messages. One stood out. It was from an entrepreneur he’d done work for during his last job. Trevor Branstone. Young, forward thinking... Loaded! He read the man’s email with a bit more enthusiasm. Coming to Dickens to ski and spend the holidays. Let’s connect.

“Okay,” he said out loud as he typed back. Looking forward to it. Message me when you’re local. “And...send,” he said as he pressed the Enter key with gusto. “What’s the worst thing that can happen? I gain an investor with deep pockets.
